Job Shadow Reflection
Teaching Children
I job shadowed Yesenia Rojas she is a teacher at Wilson Middle School in Exeter CA. She teaches is a seventh grade. Yesenia is a really good family friend so I asked her if I can job shadow her. I was really excited when she gave me the opportunity to job shadow her. I knew she was the perfect person to job shadow because what she is doing is what grabs my attention. What I love about her job is that she gets to teach children new things everyday. Being a teacher I think is something wonderful. When I go to college I want to major in liberal studies.
When I was getting ready for the job shadow I was a little nervous because having the opportunity to job shadow a teacher and seeing what she does to work with the kids was going to be an interesting experience something I've never done before. What was running through my mind was “That’s how my future is going to look”. I pictured myself walking through class being called teacher and children asking for help. Helping children is one of the biggest future goals that I have and helping them to learn new things seems pretty awesome. I really want to be someone important that changes someone’s life. During my high school I took a course where I would go tutor first graders and help the teacher out. I really enjoyed working with them.
While being at the school with Yesenia she told me that her job was easy, fun, and crazy at times. When we were in class one of her students was acting up and being rude. The way she handled it was really good. Seeing this made me realize that you have to have a lot of patients with the kids. I really wouldn't know how I would react to a student acting up really bad I feel like those are the years where student act up the most but all I need is some practice.
As I was walking around the class room I saw many different things that that students do and the questions they would ask. Yesenia asked me to perform a math problem on the white board and walk through it with the kids, so I did while solving the problem the kids had questions it felt great answering every single question they asked. When it was time for the children to go on their break we were walking around campus all the teachers were smiling and seemed really happy, that’s exactly how I want to be in my future job. Yesenia told me that I really need to love and enjoy the job because if I don’t really like what I'm doing it is going to be stressful. She also told me that I have to be able to make students feel comfortable with me that way if there is ever anything going wrong for example bullying they can come let me know and we can proceed to further action and make sure it is a safe environment.
One of the most memorable parts while being at the job shadow was when I was with one of the students and he asked if I could stay there forever it made me feel like the kids really liked me. It also gave me hope that one day I can be an awesome teacher.
After the job shadow was done and after I asked her questions of things that I wanted to know towards the job it inspired me even more to be a teacher. Being able to experience how it would be if I become a teacher was great. I feel way better about it because it was just how I expected it be maybe even better. I loved how I was able to talk to some of the students and work with the materials that teachers use. I never thought I would be able to do that. It was also really cool because before I left the principal told me “I’ll see you here in the future right” I responded with a “yes” and a huge smile on my face.
